Overall, an accessible and uplifting paper, the theme of which was “Love”.
All three Question A tasks offered plenty of scope for student engagement and reflection.
In Question B, candidates could give their views on imaginative tasks, including a pamphlet for a charity that rescues and rehomes dogs and cats, a letter to a granddaughter about life experiences, and an interview about loving relationships for a popular health magazine.
The Composition Section of the paper provided further scope for reflection.
The personal essays, one “where you reflect on the importance of people standing up for their views and beliefs” and the other, “…in which you reflect on some of the things in life that can be heartbreaking”, were popular among students.
There were also two short stories, a magazine article in which you explore the importance of not taking life too seriously and a speech entitled “All you need is love” – all of which afforded students a great opportunity to exhibit their creative skills.
Altogether, a highly accessible English Paper 1.
