Exam Review: Higher Level Irish, Paper 2

by Samantha Hogan

Predicted topics appeared on the paper – students are happy! Paper Two struck a great balance between accessibility and challenge.
The Reading Comprehensions were a very interesting read. The first comprehension was based on the inspiring life of social activist and charity worker, Sister Stan. The second comprehension was based on The Fast Fashion trade. The 6(a) questions accompanying both texts have appeared many times in previous years, therefore students will have been happy with the familiarity of these questions. 6 (b) questions were also very straightforward, requiring students to analyse their understanding of certain elements of the texts.

Students will have been delighted with the arrival of the highly anticipated ‘An Lasair Choille’ and ‘Mo Ghrá-sa, (idir lúibíní)’.

Students had a choice between ‘An Lasair Choille’ and ‘Dís’ in the prose section, while the poetry section saw a choice between ‘An tEarrach Thiar’ and ‘Mo Ghrá-sa (idir lúibíní). The questions on both sections were very manageable and really didn’t deviate from the types of questions students will be familiar with from their past exam papers.
A Thig Ná Tit Orm had a fabulous question on Maidhc’s personality traits in the autobiography of his youth growing up in the Kerry Gaeltacht. Students will have been very comfortable with this question, no doubt!

Best wishes to all students in the remaining exams,
Le gach dea-ghuí
