Exam Review: Art

The higher-level paper in Visual Studies was a thought-provoking yet manageable exam for the well-prepared student.

In section A, Today’s World, pupils were asked to evaluate unseen paintings, contemporary sculptures, and textiles, whilst at the same time incorporating art elements and design principles.   Each question allowed the students to fully demonstrate their own artistic knowledge in these short questions, which in turn would have strengthened their confidence in their capabilities.

In Europe and the wider world section, students were asked to discuss light and its purpose in a Gothic Cathedral.  This highly anticipated Gothic question was certainly student-friendly.  They would have been pleased to see how straightforward it was.

Students were asked to identify a Gothic Cathedral, paying particular attention to the divine light, construction techniques, innovations, and materials used.

In the Pre-Christian question, students were asked whether they considered the people who built Megalithic structures to be inventors, engineers, or artists. Again, this question would have been well received.

Overall, students were happy and very pleased to see such an agreeable paper.
